Hidden object games are set in attics for a structural reason, not a spooky one. Clutter gives you somewhere to hide things and, more importantly, a reason for them to be there. A clue in a clean room is a clue somebody placed; a clue in an attic is a clue somebody forgot.
Ten panoramas under a pitched roof: bare beams, old chairs pushed against the walls, furniture under dust sheets, and a doll sitting where somebody left it. At 8192 × 4096 a small object across the room is still legible when a player zooms to it, and that single fact is the difference between a findable puzzle and an unfair one.
For hidden object and search games, the discovery scene in an escape room, horror shorts and interactive fiction, and the top floor of a larger haunted house.
